Malta is a Member State of IOM since 2 June 2004.
The first project was implemented by IOM in Malta from June to December 2006. It was funded by the European Refugee Fund and aimed at introducing AVRR in Malta, with one pilot case. Prior to that, the Maltese Government was involved in a number of EU, transnational projects in preparation of its accession to IOM and the EU and the activities were managed by the IOM Mission in Rome.
The IOM office in Malta was opened in April 2007, on the basis of the Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Malta and IOM on 18 December 2006.
