Turkmenistan: Newly Renovated Medical Facility Opened in Parahatchylyk Village to Improve Community Health Provision
Ashgabat – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Turkmenistan has supported the provision of a newly renovated medical facility in Parahatchylyk village in Akhal Province, close to the border with Afghanistan. Officially inaugurated, it will provide essential, high-quality medical services to over 1,000 local and Afghan residents living in the village.
The official opening, coincided with the celebrations commemorating Turkmenistan's Independence Day and was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, local officials, residents and members from the Afghan community.
The upgraded facility features renovated rooms for gynaecological, immunization, and therapeutic services, as well as two newly added consultation rooms. All rooms are fully equipped with modern medical devices, computer equipment, and furniture. The renovation works involved the participation of 18 Afghan and four local community members, fostering positive collaboration within the community.
During the ceremony, participants highlighted that the refurbishment of the Parahatchylyk medical facility is a testament to the successful cooperation between IOM and its national partners.
“This collaboration has helped expand socio-economic opportunities for vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls, while promoting social cohesion between local communities and Afghan nationals. The initiative is a step toward ensuring long-term sustainable development at the local level”, explained Dovlet Chariyev, Project Associate at IOM Turkmenistan
The project is part of IOM’s three-year regional initiative, "Comprehensive Action Plan for Afghanistan and Neighboring Countries," and is designed to provide essential support to Afghan nationals living in Turkmenistan and local communities. A Mobile Resource Center, which is part of the initiative, has already delivered medical services and legal consultations to over 4,000 individuals across Akhal and Lebap provinces.
Aga Murad Emin, Leader of the Afghan community in Parahatchylyk village spoke about the future benefits for the community. “This newly renovated medical facility will enhance the quality of medical procedures provided in our village, especially when it comes to accessing gynecological and therapeutical services. It will also make it easier for residents to access essential immunizations to ensure a healthier community going forward.”
Additionally, the project has facilitated vocational training in sewing for 50 women at the Vocational School of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan in the oasis city of Mary, 17 of whom have successfully launched their own businesses.
This initiative is made possible through funding from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
