Minsk – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Belarus brought together 18 dynamic young leaders—students and recent graduates—to deepen their understanding of migration issues and human trafficking, and to inspire them to take meaningful action against this global crime.

Over the course of five engaging days filled with workshops, meetings, and team-building activities, participants delved into the complexities of human trafficking. They explored the connections to broader issues such as migration, gender equality, sustainable development, and HIV/AIDS, gaining a holistic perspective on the phenomenon.

The programme did more than just provide theoretical knowledge; it equipped participants with practical skills in youth leadership through an engaging session on the Summit of the Future and youth impact on sustainable development; social media engagement, particularly in creating impactful social video reels. By fostering these hands-on experiences, IOM aims to empower young people to disseminate critical information through various channels, especially through the use of digital platforms.

“You are the leaders of the future, but remember, you can drive change now! Your fresh perspectives and digital skills are vital for crafting innovative solutions to migration and counter-trafficking challenges, and spreading this important message,” emphasized IOM Belarus Chief of Mission Mahym Orazmuhammedova in her opening address.

After gaining insights from experts at the IOM, the Ministry of Interior, UNFPA, UNAIDS, and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, participants were tasked with creating their own social video reels. These video creations aim to educate a broad audience on the impacts of human trafficking and provide tools to prevent it.

A full day was dedicated to mastering the nuances of video production with guidance from industry professionals. Participants were divided into groups, each crafting a script, assigning roles, and video-making. The results were impressive, showcasing their creativity and dedication.

“I gained a wealth of insights and useful information throughout the sessions, which I am eager to share. Initially, our first team-building exercise asked us to recount our most memorable summer moment. Now, without a doubt, it’s the IOM Summer School”, one of the participants shared.

The Summer School, aligned with the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, was organized by IOM Belarus and attended by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, the United Nations Population Fund, and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. This initiative underscores the power of youth and digital platforms in the fight against human trafficking, paving the way for a brighter, safer future.
