MoU Signed With Kazakhstan Postal Operator
Kazpost JSC and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kazakhstan signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under which the partnership between the two organizations will focus on improving accessibility, efficiency and further digitalization of remittance services for migrants and their families.
The document lays the groundwork for joint initiatives, research, and capacity-building activities that promote financial inclusion and protect the rights of migrants. It represents a commitment to harness the positive impact of remittances, ensuring that migrants can send the money they earn to support their loved ones, while promoting economic sustainability and social progress both in Kazakhstan and in their home countries.
Remittances are a vital source of income for at least 200 million international migrant families, contributing to education, health care, housing, and entrepreneurship. In Central Asia, remittances play a significant role in countries' economies, with Kazakhstan receiving and sending approximately 1.8 trillion tenge in remittances annually (2022).
At the signing ceremony on 16 June, the International Day of Famuily Remittances Asel Zhanasova, Chairperson of the Board of Kazpost said "Kazpost and the International Organization for Migration are ready for long-term cooperation in their activities. Kazpost currently provides a full range of postal, financial and agency services. Our large-scale branch network allows us to be one of the leading money transfer operators and offer effective solutions for secure and affordable financial transactions".
Zeynal Hajiyev, IOM sub-regional coordinator for Central Asia stressed "the economic contribution to development of millions of migrants making remittances in the face of economic instability, disasters and climate change. As a signatory to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Legal Migration, Kazakhstan actively promotes digital and financial solutions for remittances that contribute to greater social and economic resilience and integration.”
In addition, as part of the Memorandum, the parties agreed to release a postage stamp for International Migrants Day in December
Also on June 16 IOM in Kazakhstan, the NGO “Korgau Astana”, and Kazpost JSC conducted financial literacy Training for Migrants
The training was conducted as part of the ongoing project "Labor Migration Program - Central Asia, Phase I", funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
International Day of Family Remittances (IDF) is a universally recognized holiday adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations and observed annually on June 16th. The day acknowledges the contribution of over 200 million migrants towards improving the lives of 800 million family members back home and creating a future of hope for their children. Half of these flows are targeted at rural areas, which are heavily plagued by poverty and hunger, and where remittances are most crucial.
