UN Migration Network Launched in Turkmenistan

Ashgabat - United Nations Agencies in the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan, supported by the Government have agreed to launch the United Nations Migration Network (UNMN). UNMN Turkmenistan will facilitate effective, timely and coordinated UN system-wide actions supporting the Government in implementing the Global Compact for Migration in line with national priorities. As on the global level, IOM will act as the coordinator and secretariat. “The establishment of the UNMN in Turkmenistan is a highly significant development. It will allow IOM, the UN system, Government and other partners to work together to ensure migration is a positive force for development here and throughout the region", stated Azat Atajanov, IOM’s Head of Office in Turkmenistan The Network in Turkmenistan will focus on fostering a better understanding of migration dynamics, enhancing information and coordination on migration issues within the UN system, with the Government of Turkmenistan, and with other stakeholders. Besides that UNMN Turkmenistan will work closely with international and non-governmental organizations and other entities to assist in implementation of the GCM, migration policy and approaches that support the well-being of migrants and societies in accordance with national legislation. The establishment of the UNMN is envisaged in UN General Assembly Resolution 73/195: “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration” (GCM). UN Agencies in all countries that supported the Global Compact on Migration, Turkmenistan among them, are launching UNMN in their respective countries or regions. On the global level UNMN includes 38 international organizations with IOM acting as coordinator and secretariat.
